Carthage and civilization which resulted from it was known as one of the greatest commercial, cultural and military powers of the Mediterranean basin during antiquity.  Civilization _ Carthaginian , also called Civilization Punic , has its origin in the foundation of the famous city of Carthage by the Phoenicians , on the shores of present -day Tunisia in 814 BC. JC .

It kept the customs and the language of the Phoenicians, but experienced over the centuries a certain interbreeding between Phoenician settlers and indigenous Libyan peoples.

Carthaginian culture, art and architecture are thus very diverse and bring together a mixture of different Phoenician, Libyan, Greek and Egyptian traditions.

Carthage became independent from other Phoenician cities from the 7th century BC. JC. An independence that it transformed into ascendancy and even into what could be called an empire over the course of its conquests and these colonies in the western Mediterranean.

At the time of its greatest territorial expansion, in 264 BC. AD, Carthage then dominated most of the western Mediterranean.

The Carthaginian civilization was thus a great economic power based on trade, but also a military power, which because of its expansion and the increase in its power, made itself the enemy of the Greeks during the Sicilian wars, then the sworn enemy of Rome during the Punic Wars.

The famous Carthaginian general, strategist and politician Hannibal Barca , considered one of the greatest military tacticians in history, was thus one of the major figures in this war.
