Easter Island 🗿

Famous for its famous Moai and known for being the most isolated inhabited place in the world, Easter Island is a mystery.

Triangular in shape and located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it belongs to and has a dimension of 24 km.

Regarding the settlement of the island, it is thought to have occurred around 400, 800 or 1200 AD according to different hypotheses and studies.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site , Easter Island is dotted with the famous Moai and other archaeological remains such as statues, structures, and inscriptions. 🗿

Indeed, the island includes, for example, no fewer than 887 Moai ranging from 2.5 to 10 meters in height and weighing on average 13.7 tons .

The largest Moai ever erected was no less than 10 meters high and weighed 75 tons!

400 statues have been erected on the island, the rest being unfinished.

Furthermore, an interesting fact, which personally reminds me of the famous unfinished obelisk of Aswan, is the existence of a huge unfinished Moai , 21 meters high and weighing, according to estimates, 270 tons !

It should be noted that petroglyphs (a symbolic drawing engraved on a rock) are engraved on the back of these statues.

Sculptures and meanings now lost and which remain a mystery.

Regarding the creators of these statues, they were supposedly built, erected and installed on the ahu (ceremonial platforms) by the Matamua or Haumakas —the original inhabitants of Easter Island—who are said to be descended from Hotu Matu'a , the first King of the island.

Almost all the Moai face inland, except for 7 Moai located on the sacred site of the ahu akivi , which face out towards the ocean.

Monumental and mysterious statues, simply fascinating. 🌟
